Photoessay #1580 - The Picture

At the Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven, this is known as 'The Picture'.

Probably almost 3 feet tall. The second picture is inside with May Ann on the left and me on the right (two of his great great grandaughters). I don't know why the upper left part of my head looks like it's bashed in. You can get an idea of the glare and reflections from a windowless industrial sort of building with no natural light.

It's Maier Zunder, natch. Apparently it was given to the Horeb Lodge in 1906. Probably in that memorial honor event they had with the excellent speech by Rabbi David Levy. I don't know why it was done five years after his death.

I think it's a photographic image, the small picture I have is derived from this. Initial provenance unknown. I know that Harvey Ladin had it in his house in the 1970s.

When Mary Ann and I were there last week, I couldn't get an image without a bunch of glare and reflection. Thanks to my other cousin Mal who went with Mary Ann to the Jewish Historical Society today and took a better shot. They ended up taking it outside for a short time. I'm sure the Jewish Historical Society people (likely Marvin and/or Werner) supervised this operation very closely.

Mal took a lot of different settings plus a RAW file. I'll let my brother decide which is best but will feature one version here.

Another example of coming home; not knowing what I will write about and something presents itself.

Many thanks to my cousin Malcolm Leichter who took the time to take the pictures and to Marvin Bargar, the archivist at the Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven.
