Photoessay #1569 - Abraham Savelewitz

An unanticipated reward as part of our three days of research undertaken by my cousin Mary Ann and myself was the information about her mother's first husband which had been kept a secret from my cousins. Apparently, she married him while he was in the service in 1842 right before he shipped out. The story is that, while he was overseas, he sent her a "Dear Jane" letter and they never got back together. Circumstances unknown. When my aunt wanted to marry a few years later, she traveled to Nevada for a month staying at a dude ranch that catered to the population.

Mary Ann knew the name because her mom was listed with that last name on a work recognition program. On Thursday, Mary Ann found an announcement in the scrapbook. Marvin, our archivist, knew of a scrapbook that somebody had made of Jewish soldiers from that area. He climbed up way high and came down with this scrapbook. Heck if this guy doesn't have his own page. Some volunteer kept track of all this information. Shows him married to Ruth Baumann.

Nice looking picture. Turns out Mary Ann has some pictures of her mom and this guy is in some of the pictures. Bonus! His family were poultry farmers in Ansonia 'out in the valley'.

Many squeals from our corner the Ethnic Cultural Center at Southern Connecticut State University.

A picture of Abraham Savelewitz' page in scrapbook.

Hello.
My name is Jonathan Savelle. I currently live in Cheyenne, WY, but was born and raised in Ansonia Connecticut to the son of a poultry farmer, Harold Savelle (previously Savelewitz). My grandfather was Joseph Savelewitz. I believe Abe was Joe's brother, but I'll need to speak to my mom to confirm (she's 93 and living in Florida). My dad died in 1965.

If you'd like more information, please shoot me an email at savellej@comcast.net.
Thanks.
