Photoessay #1557 - Jews in New Haven

Many years ago (33 years ago?), my mother gave me a copy of this book "Jews in New Haven" published by the Jewish Historical Society of New Haven. I had put together a typewritten family history building on one that my grandmother had done in the 1930s (ostensibly to get my aunt Ruth into some school) and supplemented with interviews of my relatives. The first article in the book is about Maier Zunder, the basis of my current work.

Many volumes in this series followed, they're now up to volume 9. And I now own the whole series. I have also arranged to purchase an antique stoneware crock from an antique dealer that hailed from Maier Zunder & Sons wholesale grocery.

I'm going on a fact finding trip to New Haven week after next. I hope to be able to talk to Barry Herman, author of that original article if he's well enough. Today, I located the "Proceedings" of the New Haven Board of Education from Maier Zunder's era. He served on the Board for 24 years 1868-1892 and was president for much of that time. I can go read them at the New Haven Museum and Historical Society.

My cousin Mary Ann is hosting and accompanying me on this quest. Just heard from her today. Remember that snow on last Saturday? She doesn't have her power back YET! Shades of the 2006 Hanukah Eve storm here. She's on 4 nights, it's such a pain.

So let's all visualize the power restored in Cheshire, CT.

PS I have 3 copies of vol. 1 so if anybody else wants one....
