Photoessay #1512 - My favorite part is the band

Just returned from a day ushering at University of Washington Football game. Washington beat California 31-23 despite goal line stand by Cal at the very end. 12:30 start makes for a calm crowd, I've found. I did get in trouble with my supervisor for hugging John O when he and Mary Ann came visiting in my tunnel. I thought he was kidding me but, on reflection, I don't think so. Oh well, it's a good way to go, don't you think?

My favorite part is the band. I love hearing them practice for half time early when I first get into the stadium. I love watching them play and ushering in the team and coaches in the area that I can see from my section. I love them running onto the field and performing right before the beginning of the game. Halftime natch!

But my very favorite is the impromptu concert they give at the end of the game. They march on as the fans leave and the band, cheerleaders and dancers run through their reportoire. But they get to fool around and dance and be a little silly as they play. Even better, Cal sent a small band to Seattle. They were invited onto the field interspersed with the Husky band. Pretty soon the Cal band was dancing and playing along with the Washignton band. Dancing and bouncing. And the Husky players played along with the Cal band's numbers. Cal's tuba players are playing running around in circles with the Husky band members. Very joyous. Gives a calm feeling of well-being for the fans leaving the stadium. And a great show for the fans who stick around just to hear the band. And for the ushers giving the fans some appreciation for coming out.
