Photoessay #1239 - Fort Monroe

Spent the day visiting with the Asay family. Which is why we are spending 3 days in Hampton Virginia. Fun! This morning we sat in their living room chatting away. Then we went to Fort Monroe, an old fort first built in 1609, important in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Five sided with a moat standing on the tip of Virginia Peninsula bordering on a border of water known as Hampton Roads which empties into Chesapeake Bay.

Delightful walk along the water with Matt and Sue (friends from high school) and their 27 yead old son Kyle. Water birds and docks to walk out on. Then we went into the fort proper and visited the Casemate Museum inside the arched brick interior walls. Includes the cell where Jefferson Davis was imprisoned after the Civil War.

Very interesting place and a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon with old friends. Nice weather too! Quiet and uncrowded.

Tomorrow we enter the tourist mainstream with a trip to Colonial Williamsburg

Picture shows Kyle, Sue and Matt after the museum visit inside the fort proper.
