Photoessay #1198 - Bellevue Arts Museum

Melina and I have been letterboxing since the beginning of the summer. We both enjoy this a lot. She asked recently if maybe we could go on a trip to a museum. So, as grandparents with one grandchild, we're easy. "I don't go to museums with my family," she says quietly.

So this afternoon, we went to the Bellevue Arts Museum (formerly the Bellevue Art Museum). Haven't been there in a long time. Used to have lots of pretty weird and crazy art. Ilana and I had a policy. Never look to see what's there. Just go there and experience it blind. Like the time, we got off the elevator and were blown away by huge revolutionary street puppets. Organize and smash the state! Since then, it's gone into bankruptcy and rebuilt itself.

Exhibits are more arts and craftsy. But still pretty darn odd. We saw some unusual fabric arts (see picture) including some fine needlework illustrating cancer cells and other pathologies, an exhibit of pioneer bonnets done in beads and tons of corsage pins that would penetrate your scalp and neck if you tried to put them on in honor of Mormon polygamous practices. And some furniture you wouldn't believe.

On the main floor was an extra cost jewelry fair featuring fine art jewelry. Melina was very interested so we sprung for it. Colorful designed original expensive jewelry with the artists present. They showed us many unusual pieces in all shapes and colors. And high price tags. Melina had never seen this before "I'm speechless" she said.

Then we went back to that great fancy bakery in Old Bellevue and had some fancy pastry. Melina had the strawberry tartlet, I had a raspberry chocolate number and Dennis had a rustic apricot tart.

"I guess we are pretending to be rich people today" said Melina. She's quite eager to see other museums. The glass museums in Tacoma or the Burke at the UW will likely be next.

We'll get back to letterboxing but museums for now.
