Photoessay #1158 - Waipi'o Valley

Still staying in Hawaii, here. And why not as the weather is reasonably rotten here. But Matt did make it here from North Carolina today, his flight was canceled yesterday and it was looking bad.

Early in the trip, we took a trip to the Waipi'o Valley. Picturesque fertile traditional taro growing area with sides so steep that you are not allowed in there by car unless you have 4 wheel drive. Period. People walk in and out but, as our guide pointed out, one mile in and ten miles out. We signed up for the last van trip of the day and we had a private tour with Douglas, very engaging. He took us down to the bottom of the valley to some taro fields which he said belonged to his family. Showed us how the taro plant was cultivated. How these fields had been planted for many many generations.

Really interesting part of Hawaiian culture and a landscape to remember. I appreciated his tour of the Waipi'o valley.

Second shot taken by my sister, more of the late afternoon light looking away from the ocean to the back of the valley.
