Photoessay #1077 - On the block?

We are having a lot of tree-trimming done in the next few weeks on some of these trees that have been neglected for 25 years.

One big tree (or whatever it is) (first picture) is definitely going. It's actually on my neighbor's property but we are taking it out. Huge, almost completely dead, prickery, in the way. I remember suggesting that she take it out 20 years ago. And it has not improved. Just don't want to damage the mailbox and the cable box. It's gone; I'm fine with it.

But, what about the holly? I believe that the big holly tree just outside my front door started as a weed that nobody ever bothered to pull out. Now it's a strong tree maybe 15 feet high? You can see that the position under the rafters makes no sense at all. And the trunk is leaning strongly against my handrails. The tree guy says that the tree always wins. The sharp dropped leaves hurt your feet if you go out without shoes. I don't use the berries for holiday things.

The second shot shows the view out my front door. The third shows looking up at the house from the front lawn.

So should it go? Would I miss it if it was gone? Dennis notes that the birds like it and you see it clearly in the glass above my front door. In a way, I'm attached to it. But no reason. Its absence would make the entry a little more bare but no big deal really.

What do you think dear readers? Should we whack it down as recommended by the tree guy?

Dear Sandy,

Yes, I think both trees should go. I don't care for either of them, and with them gone, the other trees will have more attention. Teddy says he hates the holly tree too.

Take down both trees. Take out the front yard grass. Replace with a few Japanese maples, some rhodies and azaleas (spelling?) A little woodland in other words. A trip now to the Japanese garden in it's late fall plumage might be inspirational.
