Photoessay #1048 - SIFF - Chef of South Polar

SIFF (Seattle International Film Festival) began yesterday. And, for the second year, I purchased a 'six-pack' (package of six tickets) for Dennis for his birthday. Actually I purchased two. Originally I had thought that he might like to invite a number of people to go to the meetings but it turns out that it's always me.

That means we have to actually LEAVE the house and attend six movies over 3 weeks. We can do it.

Last year, the film that I remember best is "The Unmistaken Child" a documentary about the search for a young boy who is the reincarnated lama.

I selected the first film "Chef of South Polar", a Japanese food movie set in Antarctica. Of course, sounds sufficiently quirky. And sweet. I like sweet, nothing brutal. And Japanese food? Hey, we were just THERE doing THAT! Dennis agreed so we saw it at 11 this morning. The cook, from the Japanese Coast Guard ends up in a research facility in Antarctica for an entire year. Almost an ensemble piece with a lot of the scenes with no cuts. A lot of Japanese food featured including making noodles from flour by stomping on the dough on the floor between two sheets of plastic. Hey, we did that VERY THING a few weeks ago at "Ai Ai" in Yamagata City. I have pictures to prove it!

THis shot, stolen from a film website illustrates a mean that the hero prepared when one of the crew discover that they have lobster and they INSIST that they must have fried lobster. So they do.

A great start, we both agree.
