Yesterday, Dennis wanted to go see the LadyHawks (local softball travel team organization that we support) play in a local practice tournament. Off we go to Kent to the Service Club Fields. Which we do admire. The nicest facility, really there's nothing up in our area that comes close to these. Nice fields, wide shielded dugouts. Highest fences we've seen to protect those in the park from foul balls. Nice snack bar and bathrooms, bulletin board for the brackets (hand-drawn in this case), ample room for teams to warm up, touches of art, nice playground for the little brothers and sisters, wide walkways. What's not to like about this place. Too bad it's an hour drive away.
Combination of the 16U and Miller Gold team played. We watched two games both of which the Hawks won easily. Tournament in the usual format of scheduled 90 minute games the first day followed by a single elimination tournament on Sunday. The Hawks were seeded #2, didn't hear how it came out. After the second game, we ate our lunch and letterboxed at two parks before returning home (Clark Lake in Kent and Crystal Springs in Tukwila). Talked recruiting with some of the parents.
Here Angel signals in the pitches. I had never seen this until Susanna joined the 16U team. The coach decides which pitch should be thrown next, signals it to the catcher who signals the pitcher. Sometimes the infielders will hold their hands behind their back and signal the pitch choice to the outfielders.
Some college coaches do it. Varies. Some allow the catchers to determine the next pitch.
Beautiful day to watch softball. When Susanna played, the teams still favored the uniforms with the shorts. Looked like soccer uniforms. They would wear pads guarding their shins and knees mainly for base-running. But now, the college players and travel ball players strongly prefer the more traditional baseball style uniform with the long pants and the leggings.
