Photoessay #1007 - Rhodies ready

Rhododendrons rule in the Puget Sound region. They're just coming on, many of the varieties just starting to bloom. And when they bloom, they explode with color. Deep purple, scarlet, candy pink, pale yellow, you name it and you'll find a rhody of that color pouring it on. My personal favorites are the brilliant golden oranges, they look like fire! Most everybody has a rhody bush or two. I have one in my backyard that has wanted to get BIG, and since there's plenty of room, the thing must measure 10 feet tall and 20 feet wide. Some years a lot of pink violet blooms with considerable sparkle, some years not. I've seen rhodys at the arboretum where each individual bloom is as big as a dinner plate. Huge!

Shot from a neglected rhody on the far side of my driveway in front of my house. This poor thing gets no care except for car doors opened on it. But it still gives it's brilliant blossoms. Time to bloom, NOW!
