Another picture that we featured on the memorial boards of my mom. A little over a month ago.
From the early sixties maybe. Probably on a weekend away from the kids that my parents took from time to time. An awful lot of pool furniture in this shot on some grass somewhere. That's that darn loss again, you can't ask her any more. And she may not have been able to tell me.
But, the smile lights up the entire shot. This gal is on vacation and LOVING IT. Always big on the beach or sitting by the pool. During that last weekend of her life, when my cousin could not be there because of previous commitments to a family vacation, we assured my mom that Mary Ann was sitting on the beach for her. This satisfied her.
But my mom knew how to have a good time. Usually involving sun and water. At the bottom I will feature another shot taken just last July on my nieces bat mitzvah trip. I knew that she was determined to sit by the pool with all of us. And she did. Probably the last time in her 85th year that she had that opportunity.
I wrote last July
"My mom loves to sit by the pool. She's pretty frail and has lost way too much weight. But she was determined to have a good time and go to EVERYTHING and she did. "
As I process the story of her death I pose the question "Think about it, what would you rather have, a lot of pain and misery with everybody crowding around you looking agrieved and sorrowful....or....you're comfortable and quiet and hanging out with your grown kids doing things we all like to do, watching the Olympics and fooling with photographs in a relaxed atmosphere"
Which one? My mom did it right.
