Photoessay #933 - Rice cookers

Sometime in the last year, I purchased a new rice cooker at Costco. My immediately past rice cooker, purchased at the always handy Eugene Goodwill had given out. Who knows what maladies affected this developmentally delayed appliance. It just could not do anything right. Especially cook rice. Or steam vegetables. No on/off switch. You could push the buttons and maybe something would happen for awhile. Or not. You could push buttons again in an effort to get some rice cooking going. Happened sometimes. Me and this rice cooker, we did not get along.

Brown rice? Forget it. There was a button labeled 'brown rice' but that was about as far as it went.

So Ilana picked my name for the family gift exchange. She assured me that a new rice cooker was on its way. She shbopped many places. On the given morning, I opened up a box with a new rice cooker. The best to be had at Target, she assured me. General celebration until Dennis gently broke the news that the new rice cooker was the same as the old disgraced rice cooker.

Oooohhhh, general deflation and sadness. He was right!

Ilana brightened, maybe this rice cooker would be better, maybe improved! She couldn't find the receipt. So we'll try this new improved identical rice cooker. If it doesn't work out, she assured me, I will buy you a new one for your birthday.

Picture of the two rice cookers.

Things not well in Rockford. When my brother went to my mom's house for a visit, he found her collapsed on the bathroom floor. She's having tests and x-rays now.

Cooks Illustrated (a great source for recipes as well as reliable product recommendations) recommends the Sanyo 5.5 Cup Electric Rice Cooker and Steamer...

We also replaced an old, cheap reliable one that eventually died with an expensive one that's a mess...for one think the lid doesn't sit tightly enough so there's icky steamy starchy water all over the place after it's done, plus it burns on the warm cycle. Anyway, I'm hoping to get this Sanyo model one of these days.
