Harstine Island, Harstene Island. Nobody can seem to make up their mind about the correct spelling of this island in South Puget Sound. Connected to the mainland by a bridge off Hwy 3 some miles south of Shelton.
I read that it originally was named after a sailor named Henry J. Harstein. Who wasn't even on the voyage that did the naming but had done some past heroics. Harstein was written up in a book of Jewish notable people. But the authors admitted they had no idea if these people were Jewish, just that they had Jewish-sounding names. According to Wikipedia
Dennis' family has a waterfront cabin, built by his grandfather and maintained by his aunts. It borders Pickering Passage and look across to the mainland. I like "Pickering Passage"....
Every Labor Day weekend, his family has a get together on the island. Honey ham and champagne always served. I went this time, I planted a letter box. Pretty good time actually. Weather there much better than in Seattle.
Picture shows Dennis talking with his brother Bryan outside the cabin. One shot from above with Pickering Passage in the background. The other from near the short bluff above the water looking up into the second growth forest behind the cabin.
Just a short way down to the rocky beach. A flight of about 5 steps. There's a firepit. I know Dennis' other brother Dave and wife Lureen have spent the weekend there and had a fire on the beach. Sounds pretty fun. Motorcycles belong to Dave and Loreen.
I remember we had a book about hikes to take with children with a picture of a beach campfile on the front. Susanna INSISTED that she WANTED to do THIS! Jim, bless his heart, carried around a bag of newspaper and some kindling in the car hoping sometimes to be able to build a beach campfire. Don't think he ever had the chance. But the thought and intention was there.
