Photoessay #806 - Dog Park Regulars

I know this is the third dog-related entry in the last 10 days. But sometimes you just can't choose your social life. My summer evening social life always ends up at the Montlake Terrace Dog Park. The regulars bring their young (usually male) dogs who want to play ROUGH. Including Teddy, a member in good standing. These dogs come, greet each other and immediately amicably start to wrestle, growling, baring their teeth, pull on each others necks and ears and generally roll around in the wood chips. The goal is to pin the other guy. They stop from time to time, happily go lap some water up, chase each other around (usually a variation on "I have a stick and you don't") and then start in again.

It's great for these youngsters, they tussle and roll and go home and they're ready to go to bed.

The top picture shows Teddy (the brindle) with Dakota, the blond dog who looks like he's ready to sink his teeth into Teddy but he's not. The big silvery mastiff puppy is only six months old and he likes to hang around the older stronger guys but he doesn't quite get the wrestling thing. Dakota and Teddy match up evenly. Each dog pins the other pretty equally.

The second picture shows Teddy with his nightly wrestling companion Lobo, a large 9 month old German Shepherd. Lobo looks tough but he's not. Teddy regularly pins him. So what, sniffs Ilana, who often comes, EVERYBODY pins Lobo.

It's bad when you leave and the owners murmur to each other "See you tomorrow" and you know that you'll be there.

What will we do when summer's over?
