How do you grow blackberries? Around here, the question is better framed "How do I get rid of these %$#%%$ blackberries?!!" Extremely agressive, blackberries take over everything if you're not looking. And even you are.
Think, strong, agressive, extremely hardy, nasty stickers, a real pest. I have an area in my yard, where blackberries were steathily moving in. I had Peter, my high school age, yard person, cut them all down. Of course, they're back, stronger than ever.
Blackberries can make aerial assaults, they grow up in a tree, go along the branches and then drop down so in the middle your yard, all on the sudden, you have BLACKBERRIES! Stealthy, sneaky, just try to get rid of them. Companies exist just to uproot blackberries, it's a day job.
This time of year, they bear fruit and are widely available along the side of the road. My dog walk has several stands of blackberries, I took this pic within the last half hour. Just started to pour rain.
Tasty, if you want to pick them. I tried a few.
Other notes of interest: My neighbor came by and asked if we had some portable tables she could use for her garage sale. Sure, I say, and get out our six foot long folding table (from Jim and Lanaya's antiquing days) and our heavy beat up wood card table from my parents. No problem. At dinner, I mention this and Dennis' jaw drops. "Hey, I need those tables tomorrow for the soccer tournament (he's the registrar)'. And Ilana says 'I was counting on those tables on Saturday for my birthday party at the park'. Uh oh. Ilana goes down to the neighbors to neogotiate a solution. Sorry, tables already set up with garage sale stuff, nope.
