Photoessay #791 - Hot, Hot, Hot

We're sweating out a major heat wave in Seattle. They recorded the highest temperature OF ALL RECORDED TIME yesterday (103 degrees). This town does not weather heat well. Almost all homes and most businesses lack air conditioning. People are not accustomed. This ultra-hot weather has lasted for several days but yesterday was the worst. Over 100 degrees upstairs in my kitchen. They forecasted today to be almost as hot but, as of noon, I think the temps won't go as high.

Crazy, it was still almost 90 degrees at 10 at night. Reminds me of Sacramento Valley summer nights. But, I live in the Puget Sound region, not the California Central Valley.

It affects everybody, I notice mental issues mostly. I can't think clearly, just dull and overheated. Ilana and I have the square fan going down here plus a big plastic tub fill of water for our feet. You feel a lot cooler if your feet are cool.

Last night, we held parent group outside on a small patio in the hot evening. Not because of the weather but because our meeting room is now totally full of construction materials, just no room AT ALL, completely unusable. In the long run, good news for First Nazarene Church. A small fire in the furnace room in the beginning of June caused a lot of smoke and secondary damage. Insurance will now pay for a lot of much needed refurbishment. I think most of the floors, carpets, ceilings, fixtures, etc were of original 1951 vintage showing over 50 years of wear. We'll enjoy the remodeled space when it's done. I had described the old light fixtures as 'bring your own bulb'.

We've been 'making do' with a different configuration every week. We've been meeting in a smaller 'blue room' but it's too small and stuffy. We executed attendant 'guerrilla action' moving back to the main room among all the junk, displaced pews, construction materials and debris. Now, they are using a lot of solvent and paint with attendant fumes throughout which renders the whole place unusable. So, last night was alfresco on the small patio in front. We still had over 40 people show up even on the hottest day in many years. I'm sure the neighbors wondered what was happening at the church.

For now we've will return to our old location (another church in the same area) for a few months until renovations are complete. Interesting, the other church didn't have any new Wednesday night tenants. I would think that these churches would help each other out in such situations. And so they do.

Featured is a sketch from yesterday's Seattle Times (used without permission) of the temperature display on a local building showing 100 degrees. Crazy!
