Photoessay #785 - Iconic cake
When I think back to my elementary school experiences (I started kindergarten in 1957 in Sacramento California), I have a very strong sensory memory of the organizational (PTA, scout, etc) Spaghetti Dinner.
Held in the 'multi-purpose room' with the fold down tables. The stale air and the excitement of everybody around. The menu was invariable a red meat sauce with the doughy white noodles, a green salad mostly iceberg lettuce.
And for dessert:
Lemon Jello Cake
Every mom made lemon jello cake in the square pans and put it out. Always Lemon Jello Cake. I can still see all of the pans. They all tasted the same.
Is it a regional thing? I asked my friend Gin who went to elementary school here in Seattle and she said the desserts were always brownies.
So, what do you remember about those Spaghetti Dinner desserts?
Ilana wanted to make a cake and I suggested a lemon jello cake. Results were a bit crumbly. I think she used a pan that was too big and used a big package of lemon jello rather than a smaller package.
I made her take it all with her.

This, by the way, was excellent. Big pan or not
