Photoessay #747 - Gilbert & Sullivan

Every year, Dennis and his two friend of long standing, Pat and Fred, get together along with various friends and family members and attend a matinee performance of the annual Gilbert & Sullivan production at Seattle Center. They trade off who makes the arrangements. I think this year was Dennis' year to figure it out.

We saw "Utopia Limited" a lesser known later work; pretty forgettable in many ways but nicely produced. One of the themes which certainly resonates today concerned the new concept in the UK in the late 19th Century of the limited liability corporation. The locale of the opera is a South Pacific island which intends to emulate England by turning itself into a limited liability corporation. These days, these financial shenangigans have some really damaging destructive outcomes (just look all around you). However, the opera did not explore those consequences though there was some talk about corporations not honoring their obligations. However, the second act, despite some ojections by the populace, determined that Utopia as a corporation worked just fine.

Plenty of singing and dancing and the usual pattersong by local media personage Dave Ross.

Afterwards we went to a local restaurant for dinner. Many thanks to Uncle Dan next door for taking care of puppy Teddy. Sounds like Teddy is growing up and was able to stay home by himself for the requisite 5 hours. He did chew up a tupperware cup in the backyard.

Picture shows the inside of the theatre just before the start. Gilbert and Sullivan matinees draws a pretty elderly crowd. Lower picture shows part of the group. Pat is on the far left, Dennis on the far right. Fred's not in the picture.
