Photoessay #743 - Suzie plays softball
Susanna played at Canada Cup yesterday as part of the California Goldrush, a woman's team from Northern California. Actually, this team legitimately played tournaments during the summer. Many (including the Washington Boast) are put together just for Canada Cup to round out the Women's tournament.
She hoped to play today also but her ride home evaporated so she came back with Gin and me (arriving her around midnight last night). But she got to play this one game against the Washington Blast, a team that she has played for in the past.
A very well played game, good pitching (pitchers from U Arizona and Arizona State), good fielding all around, exciting plays, strong hitting and generally good spirits. The Goldrush came from behind to win 3-1 on Stephanie Rickett's home run. That leadoff walk is ALWAYS a bad idea.
Susanna did well, going 1 for 2 and getting quite a few in left field. She hit a ground ball single her first up. She popped up this slap on her next at bat. You can see that the bat is a bit under the ball. But it demonstrates the slapping stance, note that her back foot is still on the line of the batter box as she's already on her way to first base. The technique of a Pac 10 slapper.
But, she says, it's just a tease. She looked like the old Suzie out there, laughing and dancing and having a great time between the lines. She is 24; still in good shape.
The Goldrush is currently in first place in the women's division. Unfortunately they split the international teams from the women's team. I talked to the tournament director and he gave me an 'explanation'. The top 3 wome's teams get inserted into the International Championship bracket, in positions 3, 7, 8. a lot of international teams did not come. In fact, there were no asian teams at all (no Japan, China, Chinese Taipei).
