Photoessay #697 - Best overall band

From Victoria Times-Colonist

Shorecrest High School of Shoreville, Wash., won first place among U.S. school bands with a student population of 1,200 or more. It was also named the best overall band.

Most of it is the whole darn presentation. The Highland Dancers, followed by the bagpipers, the drumline, the band and the flaggers. All dressed in those gorgeous kilts. This band practices nowhere near the time of my niece's band. A few weeks marching around the track.

For many U.S. bands, the lure of Monday's parade is its Class A status. Points gained here help qualify them for such prestigious marches as Pasadena's Rose Bowl parade.

The Shorecrest band does not aspire to these events though they do try to go to Ireland every 4 or 5 years.

Warning, I got my best band and dancer pictures ever so you'll see a bunch more this week.

The Shorecrest band marched twice. Once in the "Parade of Bands" in front of the Parliament Building. I'm sitting on the Parliament Steps. The band just marches in front of the parliament buildings. Maybe they are judged there. Almost all of the bands stopped and performed. Shorecrest didn't, I didn't get the 'traditional band' thing.

Notice that Naomi, as senior captain, leads the Highland Dancers in the Parade of Bands. But look at the next day during the actual parade. Curtis, also a senior, has the pole position. I asked Naomi about it. She said that she didn't want to be in the first row. "Really you are leading the whole band and somebody is always mad at you, you are going too fast, too slow, something. I didn't want to do it so I decided Curtis could be in front."

The whole package just hangs together to give a great parade entry.

They almost always win.
