Photoessay #464 - Torah Aliyah
My sister is going to have her bat mitzvah in a few weeks in Rockford. I will be traveling there for the event. She's not 13, she's just on this side of 50. Her daughter will be having her bat mitvah in Indiana in July. My sister is eager to craft an event which meets the local community mores for a bat mitzvah. More power to her.
I convinced her to separate her bat mitzvah from that of her daughter. She wants to do it so she can do Torah Aliyah (blessings for the Torah as it is taken out and then put back in the ark). In her temple, you have to be bar or bat mitzvah to do so. She wanted my mom to attend and thought two trips to Lafayette would be too much. So it's in Rockford. Very low key event on Friday night. I'm glad that she has a time that's just for her. I know my brother is making an abstract stained glass piece similar to mine and she's really looking forward to it. I have no gift at this point.
My brother has ambitious plans to chant the Torah prayers. He's not had a bar mitzvah but he's going to try to do it if the rabbi will let hime. He sent me a Windows Media file of the cantor from his PHilalphia Temple chanting the prayers. I find it somehow reassuring to listen to it. I can't figure out how to post it on my blog. There's lots of examples on the web to listen to. Somehow I found the familiar chants comforting. I've listened to them several times.
I am on the fringes of judaism. The only time I've gone to services in the recent past was when Ilana wanted to go. Seems like I bought tickets to high holiday services and I went to one and I think Naomi and Ilana went to the morning services together. Ilana and her friends arrange the seder. When IS seder anyway?
Picture is the torahs belonging to the reform temple in Lafayette in their ark taken during my visit a year ago. Wish I could post the torah blessings my brother sent.
PS Surprise to me! My puppy vet visit for Tremendous Teddy was this afternoon. Now nearly 31 pounds, he's gained another 8 pounds in 3 weeks.
