Photoessay #456 - Girl Fun Day
Ilana leading a hike on the second Girl Fun Day at Camp River Ranch. She said that, even though she runs the event, she likes to have an event that she's leading. Roving around, just checking on things makes her nuts. So she ran that Pony Express Hike. Not sure exactly what it is, but she does.
This event, run by the Campus Girl Scouts of the University of Washington, fills up quickly for both days. Cost: $10/kid and you bring your own lunch. The Campus Girl Scouts make enough to run their second event "Murder Mystery Tour" for cadettes and seniors for free plus have a nice dinner or take a trip at the end of the year. "Murder Mystery Tour" fills up the first day. One year, Ilana was, um, advised because she made the clues and notes a bit too graphic and scary. And there's always a part where the tour members congregate on one of the quads and the pay phone rings with the next clue. That's Ilana or somebody in the bushes calling the pay phone with their cell at the appropriate moment. I think I mentioned previously that the venues for the "Murder Myatery Tour" depend on what kind of unauthorized access the members can rustle up on the campus.
This year's Girl Fun Days went just fine. Didn't rain. No catastrophes. It's a good introduction to camp. And Ilana found new homes for all of the Campus Girl Scout stuff which has been stored in our garage these last few years.

Pony Express is somewhere between a very short hike and a very non-complicated scavenger hunt. Kids deliver mail to three stops, doing small activities at each one. For example, they performed a relay race passing a frog with a cup. And then they learned the brownie smile song and sang it to the person at the next stop, earning them a necklace with those annoying charms we gave out.
Basically we wanted to do hike that didn't involve too much walkie and could stay out of rain as much as possible.
