Photoessay #457 - Anatomy of Letterbox

For Emily; we are considering placing a letterbox as a memorial for her mother who previously passed away.

As an example I will use the Lake Forest Park Farmer's Market letterbox. This box wasn't hid in the bushes, last year it lived at the organizer's table at the Lake Forest Park Farmer's Market. The volunteers at the table loved having it. It got modest business. People would come up and ask for it.

The first picture is the finished box. Generally the box is covered with camoflage (sp) duct tape.

Inside the box are at least two items usually in baggies. One contains the stamp (in this case an apple (or something)) wrapped in a protective rag and the log book for the box. The logbook, in this case, was made from pink index stock tied with a pink ribbon. The stamp, the box placer and the name of box are often on the front of the logbook and the placer may put their own stamp on the back page.

As letterboxers find the box, they stamp their personal stamp in the logbook of the letterbox (along with a date, their name and some comments) and use the stamp they find in the box to make an entry in their own logbook also dated with a comment.

It's fun! I made a memorial stamp for my in-laws
