Photoessay #527 - Inside softball joke
Dennis has started a set of photo albums on Picasa. I chuckled when I saw it; this picture is all about context. Jaimie Juarez played for Ohio State, same year as Susanna. Short solid pitcher; we had seen her in other tournaments and she was always tough. Two years ago, we went to the big Palm Springs tournament and faced Ohio State. Uh oh, Jamie Juarez again. But it got worse, way worse. She bats, albeit in the #8 spot, but she hit THREE (that's *3*) home runs agains Oregon in one game.
Lots of people seemed to have career days against the Ducks. The Oregon team did go to Regionals 3 our of the 4 years Susanna played. But three home runs hit by their pitcher, yikes! I couldn't resist asking Coach J "WHY did you pitch to her the third time?" "She's their #8 hitter, how could we know???"
The next game, we were losing again and then Lovena hit a walk off home run. Whew! When I saw Coach A after that game, she just looked at me and said "Thank GOD!!!" with emphasis.
We got robbed on one game. Oklahoma, highly ranked with that darn Norelle Dickson batting leadoff, she was fast and strong. Scoreless game, Norelle's coming in to score, our catcher has the ball, she somehow gets around the tag. Blue calls her safe. But she hadn't touched the plate yet, in fact I don't think she did. How can you call somebody safe at home when they haven't yet touched the plate? Oregon lost 1-0, that was the only run scored.
This picture was taken the next morning at ASU's beautiful softball stadium. Oregon had beat Texas Tech the first game. This was Ohio State vs Arizona State. ASU would make the World Series this year and win it the next. I was hanging out with my softball forum buds Pat Cochran (ProudDad) and Dahl (ASUfan). They treated me like a big time celebrity as I posted often on the softball forum (bet you can't guess what my posting name was). We all celebrated when Kaitlyn Cochran blasted it over the fence. You could pretty much count on her doing that.
Dennis included this picture of Jamie Juarez, just to remember that day where the opposing pitcher hit 3 home runs in one game.
