Shadow, my constant companion, does not feel well. A large dog, 14 years old (or so, not sure) elderly. I kind of feel like her time is at hand. She's become largely incontinent. She needs to get some sleep but she's restless and it's hard for her to relax. She's not eating much though she drinks a ton of water. She has eaten two dog biscuits today. She doggedly (like she is) follows me around. It's cold and snowy out but she has spent quite a bit of time outside, I'm a little worried that she'll go to sleep in her favorite patch of dirt that she's dragged onto our stone patio (I move the dirt off the the stones, she puts it back, etc) and freeze!
The vet's office says they have medication to deal with the incontinence and I have an appointment there tomorrow afternoon. I'm a little afraid of what they might say.
I love my baby-pie but she's uncomfortable right now. I know that 14 years old is very old for a big dog (she's weighed over 100 pounds at times, I think she might be sub 70 right now which means you can really see those hip bones.
She came to us as a stray, a young dog, not a puppy probably in 1994. She had wandered into a second grade classroom and decided to stay. After a few days, the teacher took her home and looked for a family for her. I wanted a dog at the time and my only criteria was that the dog be gentle especially with children. I didn't care breed, young, old, big, little. Just gentle. Since this dog really liked second graders... And she has always been gentle, never even growled at anybody. Very wimpy for a big dog. She always thought that I should be protecting her. Loves a walk. She listened to all of the Harry Potter books when I read them to Naomi. When I said "Shadow, Harry Potter!" she would go in and get on Naomi's bed.
What kind of dog? Well somebody was big and a German Shepherd was in there somewhere...
I'm hoping Shadow feels better. Eating her supper would be good.
