Photoessay #445 - My latest stamps

Today, I feature my artwork. Yes, as unlikely as it might seem, MY artwork. I am not artistic at all, never been a strong suit for me. I have poor aesthetic sense, can't visualize things well. Plus pretty crummy fine motor skills. I don't do handwork, nor do I draw.

But about six months ago, I started letterboxing. I realize that the real fun involved placing letterboxes. But you had to have a hand-carved stamp. I couldn't carve a stamp. I moaned, I whined, I tried to get other people to do it for me. Not a bad strategy. Susanna is very artistic, has great fine motor skills and she can carve a mean stamp. When she feels like it. I got Gin interested and she's gotten pretty good. Other people have given me stamps. But it comes down to this, if you are going to letterbox, you've got to be able to carve stamps. Your own self. Give it your best shot.

So I've experimented with some different medium and tools. And I'm carving stamps. Here are some of my latest attempts. You can recognize some of them, kinda' Pretty good for me. Of course, you work on these and then you leave them under a bush somewhere.

I have not designed these stamps; I'm always looking for a drawing that somebody else has done, then I copy and trace it. Maybe not the most original or creative approach. So, if you see a design that looks familiar, be assured that I have stolen it.

I don't know why the color is so different in these shots....

I'd say you're a find carver! I don't see things better than this when I'm out. OK, there are some amazing artists out there, but most of the time, they are just people who got up the nerve to carve. (Unlike me.) Now you can plant whenever you want!
