Photoessay #441 - Mountain Bikers

Whistler really caters to mountain bikers in the summer. Our visit coincided with the biggest mountain biker event of the summer (little did we know), Crankworx, a huge international mountain biker competition. Mountain bikers (and their little brothers) from all over the world were everywhere, tons of people and hustle. The event was pretty accessible, things were free, you could go and watch any time you wanted. Whistler runs a chair lift just for mountain bikers, they have a special attachment just for mountain bikes. As it went up the hill, the chairs alternated between those filled with people and bikes. The large gondola up the mountain also accomadated bikes, there was a special line for those with bikes. One gondola car for hikers and sightseers, the next for those with bikes. They had to be lifted vertical and the bike owner held up the bike squished into the gondola car. They could get off halfway up the mountain and ride down. Mountain bike manufacturers set up their wares in a special parking lot and you were always in danger of being run down. On Saturday evening, we had retreated to the quiet of the Tennis Club (great idea!) but we could hear the crowd roar from nearby Whistler Village.

A scene from Friday's evening race down the course of the mountain.
