The Medieval Concert? Nothing Medieval about it. The annual performance event put together by the Shorecrest High School's bagpipers (Pipe Band) and highland dancers (Lassies and Laddies). Remember from yesterday, the Scottish Highlander theme from the residential area north of Seattle. A shortened event due to preparation for the trip to Ireland in just a few weeks. The greater Shorecrest band retinue (plus the choir this time) travels to Ireland every 5 years or so and marches in the St. Patricks Day parade in Dublin and often wins the competition. But as Naomi says, though the leadup to this event meant crazy times pulling it all together, "they know how to pipe and we know how to dance so it all works out"
The Pipe Band (or part of it) in the foreground led by Katie, the Pipe Major in the center keeping time with her feet. She had great stage presence keeping her pipe band together though they dwarfed her in size. Whoever designed these piper, band and lassie kilts early in Shorecrest's history should receive a major award. "To die for" as my friend Emily puts it. The largely male marching band (including some boys in our own neighborhood) love the whole kilt getup. Some parents or staff maintain these very costly unique outfits (they aren't really uniforms) and somehow they always have kilts jackets and all that other stuff to fit a high school kid of any size. And they do come in ALL sizes. I remember when Susanna coming home with her band uniform for the first time..."Dad, this uniform is worth more than this car!" which, considering the bashed-up 1979 Toyota wagon, was likely true.
The Highland Dancers (including Naomi somewhere) doing a short introductory dance in the background.

My uncle plays the bagpipes. What I can't tell is if he's any good. I have no idea how to listen to them. Sorry I had no pics to post. I left my camera in the car, but it wasn't all that amazing. Nobody you'd know.
Sleep well.
your friend,
Bon
