Photoessay #179 - Chestnuts
I do enjoy Thanksgiving food. My friend pointed out that it's an ideal family holiday with a fixed menu. The other day I looked through a "Bon Appetit" magazine at a doctor's office. Colorful articles featured gourmet versions of the traditional Thanksgiving dishes. Mashed potatoes with sorrel and rosemary, etc. I thought "why bother?" Just serve up the turkey and dressing straight, yummy just the usual way.
My neighbor suggested a new stuffing which included chestnuts and apricots. For years, I've made the Oroweat stuffing from the recipe on the box. To rave reviews. But they don't make it any more. What are they thinking? It was so good. Using the other brand just does not give the same results. So I'm open to something new.
Chestnuts, how hard can that be? They probably have them at the store, right? Last night, I learned that (this is important)
Water chestnuts are NOT the same as chestnuts
Though myself and some fellow parent group members scoured the high end grocery where we had our meeting for alternate chestnut offerings, we could only fine the regular unpeeled raw nuts. Very handsome but I hear that they are difficult to roast and peel.
I should have known, the ladies in my late night water aerobics class know all. Trader Joes might carry frozen chestnuts. Sure enough they do. Ilana will be here later this evening, tomorrow we will go out and buy the fixings for the first dinner. The big fresh turkey and big bag of potatoes. I already have the fresh cranberries and the bags of stuffing mix.
And sparkling cider. In my family, we do not have the fancy sparkling cider except at these holidays. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, everybody can drink as MUCH sparkling cider as they want. I will start out with two cases of sparkling cider.
