Photoessay #129 - Daughters' Duty

My cousins, June and Lynn, by the table of pictures they have set up for the memorial service for their father. Memorials often feature nearby displays of pictures of the deceased person. I don't know if that's an old or a new custom.

For Dennis' father, we constructed a display from a three part board like you would use for a science fair. Dennis's sister Victoria, talented in color and design (definitely inherited from Lanaya) took over the job, picking out some nice paper and selecting and placing the pictures. On my request, the picture of the young couple (Photoessay #7) was prominently featured in the center. Victoria worked hard balancing the pictures involving Naomi in the task ("Naomi, I need picture of Grandpa with a baby!) and Dennis scanned and printed away. Very nice job. The board and the service were intended not just for Jim but for both of them.

For my father, Dennis printed some pictures (though we lost the scans), and Pam had some framed pictures. I thought that the funeral home would have some bulletin boards or similar to display these pictures. No, we just had these flat unframed pictures and nowhere to put them. The funeral home came up with some slightly used display boards and we assembled them on the spot. As expected, Susanna bellowed 'Move over! I'm the digital arts minor and I'm setting this up!") She did a good job, the result was ok, not great, adequate.

June and Lynn had an assortment of pictures of Dan in frames, some with makeshift braces. June said "We found we didn't have that many pictures of him because he was always the one taking the pictures" Young and old, some individual, some outdoors, some with family. I loved seeing the old pictures. A terrible duty, having to put together the life of a father, somebody as beloved as Dan B. But they did it, with some books and pictures and a special tablecloth. They stand here by that table of portraits. They've done a good job at a task that nobody wants....

Lynn, on the right, is the little girl standing with me in the amusement park in Photoessay #119 all those years ago.

Below, M works on the table arranging pictures of her grandfather. Perhaps she has found something she didn't know about or that brings back a memory.
