When my children were smaller we participated in WACAP Weekend at Sun Lakes for mannnny years though my younger kids don’t remember it so well. Whole bunches of adoptive families, many with large families and small children would gather at this Eastern Washington resort. It’s really in the middle of dry dramatic terrain, with ancient rivers going through these arid towering coulees. The Sun Lakes resort is rather, um, rustic and is truly in the middle of nowhere, on this lake in dry territory. Somehow the result of a some long ago boondoggle, there’s a state park and a small gold course. The resort contains some big trees and big lawns around a swimming pool with modest cabins all around. Perfect place for water balloon fights, in fact I notice they sell waterballoons now. You used to have bring your own. Great for a families with children, ice cream, paddleboats, kids can run around. You can bring your boat, dog, fishing pole, your buddies. Camp or stay in the cabins.
My kids used to LOVE come here for WACAP weekend. Many young people look back on those weekends very fondly. Myself, I don’t like the arid landscape. But I can see the appeal.
Dennis really wanted to come here as part of this vacation so here we are. He enjoyed the dramatic scenery over Hwy 2 and Stevens Pass. It really is beautiful full of towering mountains. I like the bubbling Wenatchee River with its boulders and rapids and the box of peaches we used to buy on the way.
Word to the wise, skip Leavenworth and go for Cashmere.

I've been to Leavenworth twice. I loved the cherries and apricots we got from there. Swam in Lake Chelon. I just love that whole region. My sister lived in Tacoma 20 years ago, and I visited her many times. I haven't been back since then. I've enjoyed your tales and pictures.
Thanks Cheryl....your account of your own vacation inspired me. Sometimes 'on the west side' as they refer to the Seattle area in Pullman, we forget about the interesting parts of Eastern Washington. I've always enjoyed the boxes of peaches I've purchased in Wenatchee...this time I bought them in Hood River OR and they rotted almost immediately. Very disappointed.
