Photoessay # 27 - Peacock racket in paradaise

Again a Hawaii/brother picture from March. For last four days of the trip, we went to the North Shore of Oahu, a beautiful alternative to the Honolulu bustle. One day we went on an excursion down the windward side to the macadamia nut place and the shrimp shack. On the way back, we were looking for some new sights. My brother, looking on the map suggested a wildlife refuge near the water. Turned out to be a windswept barren place with a sewage plant and some nondescript building surrounded by barbed wire with signs filled with dire warnings about pesticide and poison. Not very welcoming for visitors or wildlife.

I see another place on the map, Audobon Center for something. Turns out to be the Waimea Valley Preserve, a treasure of tropical plants and wildlife, beautiful waterfall and ruins of past cultures. Magical sense of Shangri-La and ancient spirits transforms all who enter. Just looking at the pictures (which I will feature) brings back wonder for me.

Quite a few peacocks strut around near the entrance especially around the picnic area. They've got a racket going illustrated at the bottom. One peacock struts around near visitors eating their lunch. He displays his attractive plumage. He twists and turns as the tourist try to take pictures, soon they are engrossed trying to get him to turn around so they photograph his brilliantly colored feathers. Meanwhile, his mate, the peahen, has jumped onto the table and is eating their lunch. Hmmm, says Ilana, a two man op. Think they've tried this before?

After we came out from the magical valley, my brother sees the peacock waiting for the next diner. No business at present. Charlie decides to meet him, sitting at his table, make contact with the local color. However the peacock is not interested; he's exiting stage left. Where's your lunch, buster?
