Photoessay #13 - Blocking the plate?

This photo is the NCAA Division 1 Regional #15, the championship IF game May 20, 2007. University of Oregon vs University of South Carolina played in Columbia, South Carolina. Photo courtesy of Juan Blas.

Is the catcher blocking the plate? She does not have the ball and the runner ( my daughter) is starting her slide. The path to the plate is definitely blocked. The umpire later said that she thought it should have been called though it did not affect the game's outcome. This play made the score 3-0 in Oregon's favor. However, in a microcosm of the season, our #1 pitcher did not have the stamina to finish and our #2 pitcher was unable to stop the bleeding South Carolina won the game 4-3 in the bottom of the 7th to end Oregon's season. A great hometown victory. South Carolina advanced to the Super Regional where they were summarily beaten twice by Northwestern (who just shut out ASU in the opening game of the WCWS).

This unlikely play started off with Susanna striking out. Catcher dropped the third strike. Susanna takes off for first, catcher overthrows first by a bunch, ball rolls into the corner. Susanna just keeps on running.

I believe this was her final collegiate at bat and she made it count. Strikeout and a run scored.
