The lynching memorial

We went to the new lynching memorial in Montgomery, Alabama.  The first picture shows the scale of the place.  It's a big installation on a spacious site.  What strikes me about the first picture is that, from a distance, it looks like rows and rows of people lynched, that would be tortured and hung until they were dead.  The idea is that every stone represents a county in a southern state.  The names of the people lynched and the year are engraved on the stone.  Lots and lots and lots of stones.  Another thing that struck me was that it was a huge stone database.  You start out with the stones on the ground and you walk among them and, by the time you get to the end, the stones are way above you.

The statue, so hopeless and full of pain and struggle.
