Supporting AJ - Resistance
Dennis and I participated in a show of resistance to immigration policy this week. Seems that 15 year old AJ was caught by the police driving without a license. Instead of alerting his parents, they threw him into the Northwest Regional Detention Center, a for profit adult facility. He was eventually released. Now that he's 18, he's suing ICE for racial profiling. They are threatening to deport him as retaliation. He was required to go to Immigration for a check-n with possible deportation.
Word got out so we are there to support AJ when he comes in with his attorney. It looks like we are in a rural setting but we are actually standing front of a large brick and glass building. You can see Dennis holding one end of one of the banners. I'm not in the picture because I'm taking it.
Second picture is AJ when he arrived. You can see the building behind him. He went in with his attorney and we waited, chanting "AJ You are not alone" also in Spanish. After a short time, they came out. He was not held and deported that day. They were continuing this 18 year old's case. Did it make a difference that we were out there? Maybe.
We cheered and whooped when we saw him safely come out.
