I really believe that I will make a change to only eat kosher meat. I like to cook and eat meat. But, like others, I really don't want to hear that these food products were once cows and chickens. Who probably met their end in some gruesome horrible way.
In the book "Forbidden Zone," Michael Lesy writes about people who routinely deal with death usually on a professional basis. I thought going in, don't show me a slaughterhouse, please, please. He did have a chapter early on about a commercial slaughterhouse and I got through it ok. The author describes how he actually killed a cow as part of the industrial process which involves shooting a metal rod into its head.
But, a few chapters later, he described the process of kosher religious slaughter done by the laws of kashrut which insists of killing the animal in the most painless way possible showing respect for both the animal and the shochet (the ritual slaughterer). Taking a lot of effort to make the process not degrading for both parties. Thanking the animal for helping us feed ourselves and our family. The knife must be ultra-sharp and the incision carefully done.
I'm sold. I'm on my way to the University Village QFC which sells kosher meat.
