This summer I'm taking a class at UW "Introduction to Women's Studies." I knew there were many ways to go with it. But, hey, let's see where the instructor takes it. The instructor tells us that it's a survey class and a lot of things will be covered but there's not time to go into depth.
It's the end of week 3 of an 8 week class.
It hasn't turned out that way.
This class has been almost exclusively about transgender issues.
So I guess I'm taking "Introduction to Transgender Studies." Which is ok as far as it goes. There's a lot to learn. But sometimes I feel like 'enough already!' there's so much more to talk about. The instructor is a transgender man, clearly passionate about the issue. Those that know me and my family know we are no strangers to LGBT issues.
The other problem, the instructor is really ill. So what limited energy he has, he's talking about the issues most important to him. He ended a class last week early because of illness. Then July 4. Cancelled on Tuesday, came late because of medical appt today. Looked really sick; was really sick. I know he will make arrangements by next week if he cannot continue.
So I wasn't expecting to spend the summer on transgender issues, but maybe there is a reason for it. The unseen hand.
This symbol is new to me. But appropriate for much covered in the class. The point is that there's just not male and female; there are many other options.
