Photoessay #2922 - Wedding Cake Knife

My cousin sent me the special wedding cake knife by mail.  She didn't want to risk taking it on the plane.

We know that this knife has been used for wedding cakes certainly since our great grandmother Delia's wedding in 1894.  My grandmother Regina (Delia's only child) used it, also my mother and aunt used it.  I used it as well as my siblings.  My cousin's daughter Kristin used it at her wedding.

Danny and Jessica will use it later this month.

The marking says "Meriden Cutlery" and 1855.  Meriden CT was known for it's cutlery and silverware and is close to New Haven.  I'm pretty sure the 1855 is the year it was made.  So Maier must have purchased it early on.  Delia was his youngest daughter, so it was likely used by her older brothers and sisters.  Maybe.  We don't know.

Purple and silver are the wedding colors.  My cousin Mary Ann decorated it before she sent it.\
