Photoessay #2889 - Institute Library

One of my new favorite haunts in New Haven.  The Institute Library which started as a private library in the 1820s and continues.  They've had leading 'men' of New Haven as members all along and (I think) own this building on Chapel Street (in the downtown Nine Squares downtown area.  I read a slim volune of their history published in the 1920s.  Apparently this is not the first building they've owned.  They worked with the city to use their library as the basis for a Public Library in the 1880s but that didn't happen.  I think they've been recently revived with a new director and are building themselves as a cultural center and a locale for lectures.

I'm sure there's much more to it that I don't know.  But I'm a member and these are some pictures taken by Charl.  You enter through this little doorway and go up a steep staircase.

Picture of Will, the director, Mary Ann and me in the main room at this wonderful round table.  And a view of the old fashion alcove bookshelves.

Love it.
