Photoessay #1549 - Baby Regina 1896

Readers--I'm taking this genealogy and family history class and I've got a fair amount to work with so you're coming along for the ride

Picture of the infant Regina Zunder Weil (my maternal grandmother), a few months old in 1896. I'm sure that's NOT my great grandmother Delia, just the hat gives it away. Undoubtedly a baby nurse hired by the family. Delia, daughter of the affluent self-made Maier Zunder had married Charles Weil (her first cousin) whose own father had been a successful merchant.

The family's affluence would not last with the depression wiping out the wealth and this baby would grow up to support her husband and daughters working in a dry goods store. But that's over 30 years in the future and the future of this baby looked bright, born into a family of means.

But check out the yard and yards of linen in this baby dress. I had a beautiful hand smocked baby dress that I had for awhile and photographed some of my own daughters. Hope my sister has it. And the starched collar and cuffs of the nurse. Those leg-of-mutton sleeves of the 1890s.

Shot taken at a photographer's studio? The picture is securely glued to the baby book so I can't tell.

A time that seems so lost in the mist. Yet secure in itself, I'm sure that this pictures was accepted and expected in the time.

PS I think I will be able to buy that antique crock from M Zunder & Sons
