I've been thinking for my topic for my paper for my Genealogy/Family History class. Gotta go with the obvious...Maier Zunder 1824-1901. My great great grandfather. Born in Bavaria, he emigrated to New Haven by way of New York. Had several successful business under the name "M Zunder & Sons" handling dry goods, groceries, liquor, also agents for steam ship tickets. Maier also served as President of the National Savings Bank of New Haven. His most lasting achievement was 24 years on the School Board.
Blog readers...somehow I think you are going to hear more about Maier Zunder in the months to come. There is a nine volume series "Jews in New Haven, I have 5, so must complete my collection. More on all this later.
But surfing the net, I find 3 items for sale from M Zunder & Sons. The first, a two gallon crock from M Zunder & sons with that cool trademark on the bottom. Offered for $275 from an antique dealer in New Haven. I'm thinking I must have it.
Then there's this jug offered for $125 by some ebay seller in Italy. With that same way cool trademark. That would suffice if I could figure out how to buy it.
And finally this sports-oriented tobacco tin from the 1880s. Pop Smith labeled with "M Zunder & Sons". The Y clearly for Yale, also in New Haven. A collector bought this tin in 2007 for $1174. Out of my league.
I love LOVE these artifacts!
