Danny called the other day and wanted a baby picture of himself. We looked through the blog (easiest way to steal something) but couldn't find anything suitable. Baby picture? I've just sorted out all of our jillions of pictures into a very full set of four file boxes. So, believe it or not, truth is stranger than fiction, I knew just where to find one.
You gotta admit, this picture is adorable, very very cute, what an adorable little boy. I knew I could NOT go wrong with this picture. The easiest way to get it to him was to post it on Facebook. Which I did which meant all my Facebook friends saw it with appropriate comments. But he posted it on HIS Facebook account so all his friends could see it.
You can't miss with a baby picture, it's always safe.
But how about a subject that's not so safe....money.
I have only learned in the last year or so how much money is a taboo subject. Why should that be such a surprise to me? My parents would not talk about money at all. Except that you should save it, not waste it. But particulars, nope, absolutely not. Even after my father died and my mother wanted her three adult children (in late forties and early fiftes) to know about how the family finances were organized and convened a meeting with their finance person, at the last minute, she decided that no numbers should be used. Which was pretty ridiculous. By that time, my brother, sister and I already knew.
So on Theo's site, months ago, she challenged her readers to write a 26 minute memoir. Write your memoir in 26 minutes, go. In that exercise, I mentioned how the inheritance from my parents changed my activities and my finances. The next class session, she mentioned how brave I was to talk about money, that it was such a taboo subject.
Today, months later, in a long conversation with a friend, talking about our families of origin, I mentioned it and my friend said "You shouldn't say that! You shouldn't tell that!" Weird.
In another melacholy but joyful note. L'shona tova. Today is Rosh Hoshanah. I did not go to services as I didn't really have anywhere to go. Not that I tried that hard.
