Photoessay #1174 - Smoking in Japan

Many people smoke tobacco in Japan. We saw it everywhere especially among men. The picture I found is used without permission taken by Andy Gray from his website www.photosensibility.com. The title of this shot is "Salarymen smoking before work"

Check out his site for a great short film about AIDS education called "Child's Play"

We saw this on our trip to Japan last April. Sometimes men would squish into these small plexiglass rooms right on the platforms of the railway stations. All smoking. Many men in business suits smoking.

In 2002, Nobuko and her husband, Takeshi, an economics professor came to visit for a few days and we did the whole siteseeing thing including a trip to Alki Beach with the extended family to have fish and chips. I have many pictures of Takeshi clearly enjoying himself on the beach, throwing rocks into the water with the kids, etc.

He also smoked a lot, even on the beach, you can see. I liked Takeshi, he enjoyed the trip a lot. Never smoked in the house.

In 5 years, Takeshi will die at age 60 of esophageal cancer. He died soon after he started treatment, Nobuko thought they would have more time. The tumor in his esophagus breached a blood vessel in his chest and that was it.

Nobuko still smokes a little.
