Photoessay #1046 - Tousled Hair

Or Lincoln the Lawyer

Readers, you may remember the Lincoln Letter that we have had restored. Some picture of Lincoln was included in the frame with the letter. Eventually we had the conservator people complete deconstruct the contents of the frame. All interest in the letter, the print, who cares?

So it's been sitting in one of the china cabinets. I had tentatively identified it as based on the famous photographic portraits taken by Alexander Hessler in 1857. Various etchers and artists took some license with the image, mainly in the messiness of the hair.

This particular is an etching by Frederick T. Stuart of Massachusetts. #28/75 of Artists Proofs. #24/75 was sold by an action house in 2004 for $225. The Library of Congress will sell you an 8x10 print of this etching for $28.

So I would consider this piece significant though not particularly valuable. Turns out that there is a very interesting restoration/framing place right near me. I've committed to have this restored and put in a similar type frame as the letter for $150-$200.

But I got the attention of the bosses at the restoration place. Crazy what people want to restore though. My Tousled Hair Lincoln proved interesting!

The shots were taken this afternoon at the restoration place with the detail of the signatures magnified.
