Photoessay #976 - Coaching first

Day 1 of our (maybe only) softball weekend and I'm not in shape!

Dennis and I drove to Tacoma to University of Puget Sound for their season opening series. Two doubleheaders in two days. UPS lacks depth (ie players). They lost both games to Willamette but not by that much (4-3, 11-4). The second game was closer than the score indicates. Some excellent outfield play and hard hit balls. We really noticed differences in infield play, speed and general sophistication with the pitchers. We're used to watching Pac 10 play....

Picture shows Susanna coaching at first with a UPS runner looking to advance.

Yes, both teams are wearing burgundy jerseys. Just to confuse you.

The weather was very nice today but after 4 hours and the sun getting lower, it got might chilly. You know, softball in the northwest. A frigid freezing sport. So we dragged out the blankets and jackets that seemed so unlikely hours earlier.

Afterward, we planned on going out to dinner with Susanna. That didn't quite work out but she did guide us to restaurants on the water. We decided that these were too noisy and expensive. We ended up at a lovely place in the small 'Old Town' called Cafe Divina. Kind of a wine bar, nice atmosphere, some live guitar playing, delicious food and very reasonable prices.

More games with Willamette tomorrow.
