I will miss my mom, no question. Somehow, it doesn't seem right. I know I will do the things I've heard of...think of something that my mom would really like to hear about....
We had the memorial service this afternoon. My sister did a great job setting it all up. It had a very simple structure, you could make an assumption that it was easy to construct.
But I know better. My sister worked with her rabbi. We had Jewish elements, Pam and Teresa sang Shalom Rav at the beginning. We had some biblical readings. We did Kaddush at the end. Most of the rest were family members speaking about my mom and then asking the attendees to share. And many did.
Approx 100 attended. We had it at the new "auditorium" in the new building. Nice room with great light. The event staff set it up and catered it with cookies, fruit and vegetables. All lovely, we had a pianist and the Wesley Willow chaplain, Brian officiate.
The more we worked with the service, the more scouting oriented it became. We closed with Taps and it was fine.
You know how it is with memorials. The person being honored would have loved to be there to see all of their friends and colleagues. River Bluff folks, girl scouts, their neighbors at WW, their neighbors from their old house, some work people with my father. All there.
We worked a lot on dividing up the silver, furniture and kitchen stuff which worked for awhile. And Wesley Willow dining room worked overtime to allow us to have a dinner there.
The remark that we use at Changes came to mind as I greeted the guests. I thanked and chatted with everybody who wanted to talk to me. "We're glad you're here but sorry you had to come"
