PHotoessay #733 - New Oregon softball coach!
No newcomer here. The University of Oregon Athletics Department names Michael White new head softball coach.
Great news. Michael White was an assistant during Susanna's freshman year, she really liked him. Sometime he seemed like the source of sanity for her. The pitchers and catchers flourished that year. I remember, when my parents came to visit and we were showing off the Casanova Center early on game day, and we ran into him. He stopped and greeted my parents (Susanna's grandparents) and then gave them a gracious impromptu tour of the facility.
During our unofficial recruiting visit before Susanna's senior year of high school, Coach Arendsen told us of hiring him away from the midwest and how pleased she was to have him on her staff. Very well respected in the softball community.
He also has pictched for New Zealand National team for many years. He's lived with his family (including 3 daughters) in Eugene for quite a few years. Maybe, just maybe, he may keep the assitants. I would love for Coach J and Coach Mick to keep their jobs but who knows?
Good news for the Ducks. Only downside is there are so few female head coaches. They've replaced female coaches with male coaches in Women's Basketball, Volleyball and now softball.
But no matter, great hire! Initially, I was concerned that they might hire a former Washington head coach. But good sense prevailed!
Picture from the UO site is a blast from the past showing Anissa Meashintubby and Jenn Poore, both seniors when Susanna was a freshman. Who's the third player, Asnley Richards maybe playing third base?
Congratulations Coach White!
