Photoessay #424 - Hole in the wall

Hole in MY wall. I took a number of pictures documenting my window installation a few weeks ago. Of course, they have to take the old windows out so they can put the new windows in. Duh. But, it didn't occur to me that this would cause huge holes. We did this a very pleasant July day so the temperature or the rain were not a factor. So close to the summer solstice, they could work into the night to finish the job in one day. They worked until 10pm. I was exhausted!

Here is the front of my living room with the window out. What a huge hole, a huge window. And a nice aspect, I've always appreciated that about my home.

I'm pleased to report that those old drapes are going to be GONE! I've always liked them. But let's face it, they were old when we moved in 21 years ago. The Penneys lady came by yesterday and I ordered 7 windows worth of covering. This front window got the fanciest treatment, still have a wall of formal drapes but unlined, a brighter open casement weave with a hint of metallic gold running through it. I'm such a terrible shopper, have no patience nor vision about this. Dennis neither. Which is why we have not replaced a curtain or blind in 21 years. Whatever that lady had, I was going to buy, I knew that.

My ideas about window coverings are: When it's light you open them, when it's dark, you close them.

But apparently there are many other possibilities...letting light in, keeping light out, filtering light, looking through blinds, privacy, energy, partially opening them, fashion accents, opening only parts of them for effect, etc etc

Why? When it's light you open them...etc

So that affected some of my choices, it's fine. Because we bought high quality double paned windows, energy concerns are not so important. It's mostly privacy. But people can't really see in because of the trees and the way my house is sited. Except the Khans behind me and I figure they've already seen everything already.
