Photoessay #263 - D is for Duck

The University of Oregon Duck softball team started their season last weekend. Officially we are out of it, but not much. Susanna is the student assistant coach. She resisted it, she didn't want to travel but she loves the game and before you knew it "how can they run the infield without me?" She traveled to Palm Springs for the opening tournament. Some tough times, the Ducks went 2-3 with some tough calls and some errors. All part of a new coach's experience. We are not intending to go to any of the pre-season tournaments ... wait we are going to the "Cascade Clash" in Eugene. The Ducks open Pac 10 with a single game here in Seattle. We will go down for a Pac 10 weekend or two. Dennis still wants to make the trip to the Bay Area. To see his uncle, the Humphreys, the Beittels. Yes, we will likely do that.

Picture is from her playing days. Not sure where I got this picture, it's in Eugene against UCLA. That's Lisa Dodd playing first base. Concentrating on receiving the throw, not paying attention the air-borne Suzie who's about to collide with her. Could be GoDucks. Could be Ducknews. Susanna barreling down the line. Not sure why she's sliding into first base. Flying through the air, as usual. She might have been out on this one.

Personally I associate Duck with a bird and nothing with Softball, but it looks as though they are having fun!

Go Ducks!

I can completely understand why one would think that a duck was waterfowl and not an athletic program.

I think I will write a post about how the phrase 'Go Ducks' is like Aloha in Eugene. It means hello, goodbye, regards, how are you, etc

I've seen other ducks in the day's blogs but none quite like these.

This made me laugh because there's been so many duck photos of the bird variety today. Well done for thinking around the subject and coming up with something else!

Great action! I know nothing about softball (would you believe this is the first time I've heard about it?) but yet again I'm learning by blogging.

Azure-Lisa Dodd played a lot at second base last year, with Megan Lagenfeld at first. Based on the absence of a baseline going to that base, it looks like Susanna is sliding into second base. Be well. ASUSoftballFan

You know, I think you may be right. I was thinking that the green background was the "0" on the outfield fence. But, looking at my poster, I realize that the outfield fence part says "Oregon Ducks" but there are some single "O"s on the green fence behind home plate beneath the screen. Which I ordinarily would not see. So, this could be taken from left center. Susanna stealing, Lisa Dodd playing second, taking a throw from the catcher. We're looking at the top of the pitcher's circle towards the first base line and seeing the ")" underneath the screen. That would explain Susanna's slide.

Good catch!

The "O" not the ")" in the end of that comment
